Working with SSAFA

(Formerly known as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association)

We feel privileged to have been providing occupational therapy and physiotherapy to veterans in Kent since 2019 through our work with SSAFA, the UK Armed Forces Charity.

Kent Occupational Therapy’s work with SSAFA in Kent

Helping veterans maintain their independence.

Occupational therapy and physiotherapy assessments for SSAFA look at helping to increase the independence of the clients we visit. We have seen clients from all Armed Forces backgrounds and of all ages, each with their own unique story and set of circumstances. We assess each person’s individual living situation and listen to their specific needs before making recommendations.
The service was exceptionally useful because now I will have a comfortable chair which will rise and recline to alleviate my back pain and cause less pain when standing. Claire was kind, polite, professional and helpful. She explained everything she was doing in a calm manner, asking questions and listening carefully to my answers. Claire was very friendly and showed empathy towards my situation. I would like to thank Claire for her valuable time and effort, and I would have no hesitation in referring this service to family, friends and colleagues. Thank you.

As part of the package we offer SSAFA clients we work with a highly regarded and well-established mobility company, Cinque Ports Mobility and Healthcare who carry out joint visits with us when we are recommending equipment.

Working with Cinque Ports Mobility and Healthcare offers the client the benefits of an extensive knowledge base – The OT knows what specific equipment will help to maximise a client’s independence and Cinque Ports Mobility and Healthcare knows what equipment is available and can bring it to an appointment to demonstrate it. They are then able to adapt it to make it bespoke to that client’s needs.

Working with SSAFA

Claire Farnham

lead occupational therapist for our work with Kent SSAFA
I greatly enjoy the SSAFA assessments as I am able to make a positive difference to someone’s life after what they have done for our Armed Forces. For most people, being able to get up out of a chair or go out into their local community with ease are tasks that are often taken for granted. To be able to help a client achieve goals such as these is immensely rewarding.

SSAFA is such a great charity that supports and promotes independence for clients. This aligns so well with our values and beliefs as physiotherapists, who work with people to focus on their individual goals and keep them as independent as we can for as long as possible, so they can do everything they want to! My recent work with a client was hugely rewarding, in trying to get him to London to see the Cenotaph and ready to celebrate his 100th birthday! It involved lots of problem solving, different therapeutic techniques and lots of stories along the way. It was a pleasure to be a part of his journey in getting him to celebrate his birthday in the way he wanted.

We really enjoy working with such a worthwhile organisation and take care to learn from the SSAFA caseworkers about their client’s circumstances. Over the past few years, we have got to know many of the case workers well and have built up positive working relationships with them. It’s especially rewarding when they update us with news of their client’s increased independence, having received the equipment as recommended by one of our OTs or to hear about a client’s improved mobility following treatment sessions from one of our physiotherapists.
