Occupational Therapist

Wendy Cruse

Area of interest and relevant experience

I qualified as an occupational therapist in 2008 and worked in hospitals in the following areas: stroke services, orthopaedics, medicine and older people services, including dementia. Whilst working in the hospital services, I was given the opportunity to set up the occupational therapy role and work within community rehabilitation across East Kent. I moved into community rehabilitation in 2017 and worked as a case manager with KCC which provided me with a good understanding of social care provision and working with people in crisis.

When did you start working with Kent Occupational Therapy?

February 2023.

what do you like about being an OT?

I am an experienced Occupational Therapist who is passionate about working with older adults living with long term physical health conditions, frailty and dementia. I have gained my experience through many years of working with people in both health and social care settings. As an OT I am a great believer in supporting a person’s general health and well-being and enabling people to reach their goals. I work creatively with people using a person-centred approach to engage in meaningful activities and occupations to aid recovery or maintain their level of function. I have an interest in groups to aid cognitive stimulation and reminiscence for people living with dementia.

Outside of work

I live in Folkestone and enjoy walking in the countryside and near the beach. I am a keen gardener and had a 6-month career break in 2016 to start up my own gardening services. I enjoy cooking for my family and friends. I enjoy socialising with friends, trips out to the theatre, holidaying abroad, embracing new experiences and adventures. I have supported my autistic son in voluntary roles within the community to help him gain a variety of opportunities. I have run a local group for the past 12 years for Autistic adults to help promote social skills and positive friendships.
